In this course we will explore the design and use of paper templates to construct pottery forms from slabs. Cups, mugs, vases, and jar forms will be areas of focus and we will also explore various surface decoration techniques including terra sigilatta, vinyl stencil fabrication, glazing, and other finishing options. Students will practice the process of making and handling of slabs, and constructing successful pottery forms with handbuilding techniques. Work will be bisque-fired at the end of class. Prerequisite: Foundational ceramics experience requested. Students are asked to bring the following supplies Any standard studio tools that you already have and use. Xacto knife Scissors Rulers Shaping ribs Texture tools Sketchbook Small rollers or brayers Black underglaze pencils Your supply fee and studio access will cover the following 15 lbs of OM4 ball clay 2 x 2-foot piece of sheet rock, taped on the edges with duct tape Two per student Assortment of underglazes Masking tape Duct tape Boards for works in progress Roofing felt Spool of twine or kitchen string Push Pins Pack yellow pencils Scissors, heavy duty enough to cut tar paper or cardstock Chalk Banding Wheels Rolling pins
