Art Classes

For those curious about clay, or wanting to know more of the story, this all-level handbuilding class is an investigation into some of the most influential ceramic time periods. Using the public collection database from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and reference books discussing clay, students will have an opportunity to use new handbuilding skills to recreate objects of their choosing. We’ll cover several coil building, slab construction, and sculpting techniques while we take a deeper look at different forms and their origins, both historical and contemporary. This is a great opportunity for newcomers to uncover the mystery of clay, and for experienced handbuilders to get into the details, exploring scale or function. Students are asked to bring the following supplies Old towel or rag for cleaning Wear clothes appropriate for working with clay and close-toed shoes Trimmed fingernails Apron (the Art Colony also has some) Indoor shoes for winter classes Your supply fee will cover the following 25 pounds of stoneware clay Room in one bisque firing Room in one glaze firing Additional Open Studio Times Students are welcome to work in the Ceramic Studio outside of class from 9 AM – 9 PM when no classes are in session. Note that for open studios that fall on a student’s class day, the student is allowed to work right up to class. Otherwise we request that studio users exit one hour before class time to allow the instructor time to set up.
