Monotype through Drawing demonstrates trace monotype, which is a linear approach, allowing an artist to explore the specific vocabulary of drawing while making one-of-a-kind prints. Done most effectively on dry Asian paper, trace monotype can stand on its own or be used as the beginnings of collages, mixed media works, and printstallation. Trace monotype is portable, uses no press, and invites possibilities for plein air printmaking. Students will also augment their trace monotype images on the press: stencil printing, counterproofing, and ghost printing. They will learn to roll out seamless flats and blend rolls that transition beautifully from one color to another. Accessible and unique, Monotype through Drawing is for artists of varied experience, from beginning drawing students to seasoned printmakers.  See 5-minute teaser of trace monotype: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlPTXjLxoMQ Students are asked to bring the following supplies Xacto knife/box cutter Scissors Varied drawing implements: different kinds of pencils, ballpoint pens 1/8” Plexiglas, 18” x 24” (beveled) You can easily bevel your plexiglas yourself by using a file. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg9Y8uRX17c Kitchen gloves for cleanup  Visual inspiration: drawings, photographs, laptop Optional Miscellaneous Asian papers (aka rice paper) Tools to make textures/patterns, such as: a fork, a comb, fabric, craft items  Rubber stamps  Music or poetry to share with the class Your supply fee will cover the following supplies Basic lithography ink palette Process cyan Process yellow Process magenta Yellow ochre Sepia White Black  Ink modifiers: magnesium carbonate, transparent base, tack reducer  Kitakata paper, 12 sheets/student   This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
