Explore the process of copper etching, but in plaster. Students will learn all aspects of the etching processes; coating plates with ground, line drawing, aquatint, spit-bite, and other etching techniques. They will then learn to etch, ink, and wipe the copper plates but instead of printing the plates through an etching press, will mix and pour the plaster into a mold over the plates, resulting in a unique, sculptural print of their piece! While the plaster is curing, a hanging system can be set in the back so prints can be displayed on the wall, or left to free-stand as a sculpture. Students are asked to bring the following supplies Sketchbook Sketching materials An idea or images for inspiration/reference (plate is 5 x 7-inches) Your supply fee will cover the following Copper plate, 5 – 7-inch Powdered plaster of paris Mold materials Use of studio supplies, including ink, newsprint, gloves, etc. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
