Join us for our first community wood firing, where Cook County potters and other clay curious folks will come together around the spring equinox to fill and fire the Art Colony’s new wood kiln. We will load the kiln on the 18th, light it at sunrise on the 19th. With roughly 12 hours of daylight, our goal will be to finish firing before sunset. This event is for anyone looking to learn about wood firing, whether you have ceramics to put in the kiln or not. We’d love it if you did though! Bisque fired, cone 6 capable ceramics and glazes are required. Art Colony glazes will be available to use on loading day. There are many aspects to wood firing, so we ask participants to commit to helping with the work of loading, firing, and unloading, relative to how much work you have in the kiln. At a minimum you are required to put wadding on your work before loading. About a month before the firing, the studio manager will ask that you commit to how much work you will bring and we’ll make a rough schedule for the firing.
