Sumi-e is a Japanese word that means “ink picture.” Learn to paint the sumi-e way using ink, Chinese painting colors, rice paper, and bamboo brushes. Students will paint Minnesota subjects while learning the basic brushstrokes and techniques of the art form. Discussions will include beginning composition and an overview of the materials used in East Asian brush painting. Class includes demonstration plus open painting time. Brand new beginners and participants from previous sessions are welcome to attend. This workshop is open to ages 15+ Students Should Bring The Following Supplies White wool felt or tightly woven light-colored smooth wool for undersurface or 10-12 sheets newspaper Ideally, felt or woven wool should be 24 x 24-inch or larger Old hand towels or paper towels for blotting brush 2 water containers for rinsing brushes, the size of large yogurt containers At least 6 small white/light colored FLAT plates or saucers for mixing ink Saucer size is good Small paper plates will do in a pinch At least 6 small shallow bowls for mixing color A watercolor palette is not suitable for color mixing Sketchbook and pen/pencil Other Supplies Option 1 Optional Supply Kit available to purchase at time of registration, includes Two bamboo brushes 4 large sheets of Chinese xuan paper Shared ink Shared Chinese painting color Note that even if you purchase the optional supply kit, you will also need to bring the list below entitled, Students Should Bring The Following Supplies. Option 2 If you already have supplies, please bring them. You do not need to pay the supply fee if you already have Chinese, Japanese, or Korean supplies and will not use the group supplies. Note: Watercolor brushes are not appropriate for this class.
