Botanical drawing is a valuable way to refine a drawing practice, to learn to see with a more focused lens, and to use drawing as a way to explore and learn about the world around us. This course provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop and enhance their ability to observe and study the details of a given object. From its shape, color, textures and feeling–plants are alive and we will work with that aliveness to create botanical mixed media art. In addition to observational drawing techniques, learn and engage with a variety of experimental drawing and painting techniques. Shannon will be teaching a two-day in-person class at the Art Colony June 26 – 27, 2026. Students are asked to bring the following supplies to the session: Cut flowers or botanicals to use for visual observation Wood panel (with or without cradle) Your favorite mixed media materials (all welcomed) At minimum one Posca paint marker or something similar Various scrap papers Substrates Options include Baltic Birch Painting Panels or Hardboard and Wood Painting Panels between 8 x 8-inch and 11 x14-inch Students can also opt to get a wood panel from their local hardware store
