From Grand Marais Art Colony

Watercolor Batik is a modern twist on the ancient Javanese art of batik. Students will learn about the origins of batik as well as the basics of working with a hot wax resist, while using instructor-provided resources to create a batik painting of birches with nuthatches. Kim will guide experimentation with traditional batik tools, including patterns and color layering. Bring your own photos or sketches as subject matter to create a new batik and join Kim as she helps you gain skills so that you can continue exploring the medium on your own. Students are asked to bring the following supplies Sketches or photos you want to work from such as: An image of a structure Landscape/waterscape Wildflower Bird Look for images with clear patterns of light and dark, and easily generalized shapes. For example, a tulip may work better than baby’s breath, a heron better than a far away sparrow, a tree with clouds of leaves better than a close up of a pine needle. Tiny details are very hard to render in batik. Your supply fee will cover the following Paper (Kinwashi) cut to size Work boards covered with freezer paper Wax melting pans and wax Traditional batik tools and wax brushes Watercolors (Richeson student grade) Watercolor brushes Tracing paper Drawing paper and print outs of source materials Hair dryers and irons Newsprint for wax removal Pens Pencils Tape and miscellaneous supplies Art Colony Student Lodging Starting August 16 and moving forward, the Art Colony is thrilled to be able to offer affordable student lodging. Access to lodging is one of the most practical barriers facing visiting artists and students. By offering below-market-rate housing, we can open our doors wider to emerging artists, rural participants, young creatives, and those for whom the full cost of travel can feel out of reach. Visit our GiveMN fundraiser to learn more about our capital campaign. Where is Ella’s Inn? 118 West 3rd Avenue, directly next to the Art Colony’s Founders Hall Studio. What is the nightly rate? Registered Art Colony students will pay $85/night. How do I reserve a room? As we get our ducks in a row with an online system, we invite you to reserve a room by reaching out to Emma at in**@******************ny.org. Include the class you are signed up for along with your arrival and departure dates
