FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AgroCouncil Presents “Greenport in Bloom” A Month-Long Celebration of Cherry Blossom Season Greenport, NY — The AgroCouncil is proud to announce Greenport in Bloom, an annual celebration of the cherry blossom season taking place throughout the month of May. This village-wide festival will feature five weekends of events including a 5k rate, the Petal Tour, entertainment, a children’s event and special offerings from participating local businesses. With more than 300 cherry blossom trees representing seven distinct varieties, Greenport’s blooms unfold in stages—ensuring that visitors can experience blossoms somewhere along the Petal Tour throughout the entire month. Festival Highlights Opening Weekend – Saturday, May 2 The festival kicks off with a 5K Race at 9:00 AM, led by Nicki Gohorel. Following the race, participants are invited to an opening day brunch at American Beech Restaurant. Opening day also marks the launch of the festival across the village, with participating businesses unveiling blossom-themed window displays and exclusive offerings for the month. Second Weekend – Mother’s Day Celebrations (May 8–9) The second weekend highlights Mother’s Day with special promotions and experiences focused on celebrating moms. On Saturday, May 8, the festival will host its first-ever guided walking Petal Tour (time and meeting location to be announced). Select trees along the route will be adorned with pink ribbons and highlighted by longtime Tree Committee member John Quinlan, who will lead the tour. Third Weekend – Friday, May 15 “Stories in the Sky: A Kite Decorating Adventure” Starting at 2:30 and finishing at 4:00 PM at Floyd Memorial Library, this after-school event invites children (grades 1–12) to explore the Japanese tradition of writing messages during the “Hanami” which means, flower viewing during the cherry blossom season. Participants will add their messages (Sakura no kotaba) and decorate their own kites. Afterwards they will receive instruction on flying them in the library garden. Paper kites and decorating supplies will be provided free of cost and children will take their kites home with them. Fourth Weekend – Memorial Day Weekend This weekend will spotlight festival vendor offerings, with a full list of participating businesses and experiences available on the AgroCouncil website. Final Weekend – Closing Celebration The festival concludes with a special cultural performance by Japanese Taiko drummers, presented by CAST. The performance will take place at 2:30 PM Saturday, May 30th at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church on Main Street in Greenport at 2:30. Ryu Shu Kan Japanese Art Center will be holding a Taiko Drumming performance and interactive demonstration.
