Ceramic Painting: A One-Day Workshop with Ryan Flores

Greenwich House Pottery is pleased to welcome artist Ryan Flores for a one-day workshop presented alongside his exhibition, The Watchers, on view this fall in the Jane Hartsook Gallery. IN THIS WORKSHOP Participants will learn about creating a “ceramic painting”, from concept to construction. We will focus on slab building, basic handbuilding, glaze layering and fusing and a particular attention to understanding moisture levels to master clay forms. Ryan will share about his personal practice and offer technical approaches to executing delicate, low-relief forms. ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Presented in a format that directly references still-life traditions, Ryan Flores’s new ceramic works bridge the gap between two-dimensional imagery and sculptural space. Each piece tests the limits of the medium through delicate, highly detailed structures and fragile elements. Through specialized glazing techniques, Flores mimics the chiaroscuro, translucency, and rich surface textures characteristic of historical painting. Informed by a deep knowledge of art history, his work adopts this painterly visual language to construct a personal narrative that actively dialogues with the canon. Ultimately, the artwork entices viewers through vibrant color and material sumptuousness, offering a captivating experience that balances historical reverence with intimate self-expression. This workshop is held in conjunction with the exhibition, The Watchers on view in the Jane Hartsook Gallery, September 17 – October 30.
