About this event
One of 54 upcoming events at Guild Hall, and 518 across the Hamptons.
Go behind the scenes of The Living Ancestors, a new multimedia dance-theater work conceived and directed by j. bouey, a 2026 Guild Hall William P. Rayner Artist-in-Residence. Through performance excerpts and conversation, this In-Process presentation invites audiences into the development of bouey’s ambitious disco-funk space opera. Guided by a poetic libretto by Junauda Petrus, The Living Ancestors imagines a future global society on the precipice of abolishing oppression, where a renowned band of griots reveals their origins as formerly enslaved clones from the Underground. Drawing on research into Punking and Waacking, bouey and the company connect these forms to the liberating underground club cultures from which they emerged. Featuring Dane Deveraux’s sonic landscape of funk, disco, and house music and George Del Barrio’s Live Performance Camera Obscura projection design, the work brings movement, music, text, research, and live media together to build a bold speculative world.
