Annual Meeting and Archer Lecture ft. Author and Maryland State Archivist Owen Lourie

The Historical Society is pleased to announce this year’s guest speaker for the George W. Archer Lecture: author and State Archives Senior Archivist Owen Laurie, who will relate the story behind his new book about the Maryland 400. For more than 10 years, staff members at the Maryland State Archives have researched the soldiers who served in the Maryland 400. They have written and posted online biographies of all the known members of the unit. Now that the work has been published as a book, this is the first time that every Maryland soldier’s story has been told, including some soldiers from Harford County! In August 1776, Maryland’s soldiers saved the Continental Army at the Battle of Brooklyn, earning the nickname “Maryland 400”. They went on to fight in nearly every major battle of the War, gaining renown for their courage and discipline. Their story has never been fully recognized. This is a unique opportunity to hear these stories and learn of the incredible bravery of these Marylanders and their role in changing the world. Registration is required.
