Servitude

HEDGE Gallery is proud to present Servitude, a compelling new exhibition featuring recent paintings, mono-prints, and sculpture by artist and educator Sarah Curry, running from October 14 through November 21, 2026. Grounded in themes of domesticity, labor, and societal expectations, the exhibition showcases Curry's latest body of work alongside curated contributions from nine regional female artists. The origin of Servitude was inspired by a photograph of graffiti reading, "I have cooked for men I should’ve poisoned." This provocative statement prompted Curry to explore historical and contemporary dynamics of service, power, and hierarchy. Domestic objects and everyday tools of labor are reframed throughout the exhibition as narrative objects, illuminating the experiences of invisible caretakers and translating routine tasks into powerful expressions of resilience and resistance. Curry's primary body of work includes oil paintings on panel and canvas, mono-prints, and sculptural elements. Featured works such as I’ve Served Men I Should’ve Poisoned, Et Tu Brute, Sticky Fingers, and Gotta Break a Few Eggs explore subtexts of control, care, and exhaustion. Symbolic details are embedded throughout the collection—including rich purple fabric representing dignity, justice, and women's empowerment, a lace collar gifted by a League of Women Voters activist, and subtle art history references that comment on repeating historical cycles.
