Pathways to Freedom: Kentucky and the Underground Railroad

Join Locust Grove in welcoming Dr. Alicestyne Turley to discuss the history of the Underground Railroad in Kentucky. There is documented evidence of slave escapes occurring from the time the first enslaved Africans reached American shores. However, the National Park Service identifies the height of the Underground Railroad movement as the years between 1820 and 1865. Defined by the Park Service as “Efforts sometimes spontaneous, sometimes highly organized; to assist persons held in bondage to escape slavery”, many consider Kentucky the border state that most clearly separated slavery from freedom on the Underground Railroad and in American abolitionist history. This lecture is part of our Afternoon Lecture Series on the first Wednesday of each month, and takes place on Wednesday, September 2. Doors open at 12:30 PM for drinks and refreshments, and the lecture will begin at 1 PM. Presented by Kentucky Humanities as part of the Our American Story: Kentucky’s Voices series under the theme “Remembering Together”. Tickets are $8 for Locust Grove members and $10 for non-members.
