Women at the Valley Forge Encampment

Over 400 women—and some exceptional ladies—wintered at the Valley Forge Encampment. Although much has been written about General George Washington’s leadership there, the transformation of the Continental Army, and the hardships suffered by the soldiers for those six months in 1777-1778, the stories of the women with the army are rarely heard. This presentation by Nancy K. Loane, Ed.D. will introduce you to the women of Valley Forge and give new perspective on the famous encampment. An accomplished speaker, Dr. Loane has given over 250 presentations throughout the country, all focusing on the experiences of the women and soldiers at Valley Forge and the myths and stories associated with the encampment. She is a formal seasonal ranger at Valley Forge National Park, as well as the author of the award-winning book, “Following the Drum: Women at the Valley Forge Encampment.” This presentation will begin at 2 PM in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn.
