For residents of 19th-century Sugartown, ice was an essential part of everyday life. Before refrigeration, blocks of natural ice were harvested each winter and stored in ice houses to preserve food, cool drinks, and support local businesses throughout the warmer months. Sugartown’s general store, businesses and households all depended on the ice trade, making it a vital link in the village’s economic and social fabric. The Antique Ice Tool Museum is housed in a completely renovated 1834 stone bank barn.  Inside you will discover the fascinating history behind the natural ice trade.  Step back in time as you walk in the footsteps of the iceman.  Follow history from the harvest to the delivery of ice and learn about the rise and eventual decline of an industry that had a profound effect on the way we live. The museum houses the largest private collection of antique ice tools and memorabilia in the United States.
