The Historical Society of Hammonton (HSH) presents another fun FREE-to-ALL Speaker Series event on the first Thursday of the month at the Canoe Club Senior Center, Hammonton Lake Park. No pre-registration required. Join us for an evening of local history and community! First Thursday of the month Canoe Club at Hammonton Lake Park Free and open to the public – no membership or RSVP required! Schedule: 6 PM – Monthly Membership Meeting 6:45 PM – Refreshments 7 PM – Speaker Series Presentation The program will feature former New Jersey State Senator Nicholas V. Asselta who will present A Place of Honor, an award-winning documentary produced by the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial & Museum. The film shares the personal stories of Vietnam War veterans and Gold Star families, exploring their experiences before, during, and after the war. The documentary also tells the story of how veterans and families came together to establish the Memorial and Museum, finding healing and renewed purpose while ensuring that the sacrifices of those who served would not be forgotten. In addition to presenting the film, Asselta will share insights into his involvement with the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation, where he serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees. His commitment to honoring veterans is deeply personal. His older brother, Charles C. “Chickie” Asselta, was killed in action during the Vietnam War, and Asselta has dedicated much of his public service to honoring his brother’s memory and the sacrifices of those who served. A longtime South Jersey community leader, Asselta served in the New Jersey General Assembly and State Senate, followed by an appointment to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. He has also held leadership positions in the private sector and currently serves as President of Asselta Strategies, an independent consulting firm. This special program offers an opportunity to reflect on the experiences of Vietnam veterans, the families who lost loved ones, and the importance of preserving their stories for future generations. An Organization for All Ages The Historical Society of Hammonton is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich, multi-cultural social, economic, and political heritage of our town and its people. Our mission is to increase awareness of Hammonton’s rich history and to establish public access by collecting, conserving, interpreting, and promoting it to the widest possible audience. Get Involved! There’s a place for you at HSH. Help at events, join community outreach, support fundraising, or dive into museum collections and oral history. With many active committees, you can get involved as little or as much as you’d like. Send us an email and tell us what interests you! Located in the historic former Town Hall (built in 1887) in Veterans Memorial Park, the Museum is open on Saturdays from 11 AM–2 PM. Other days by appointment or happenstance (if the OPEN flag is flying, come on in). For more information, call (609) 270-7652 or email [email protected]. Visit us online at www.historicalsocietyofhammonton.org. Funding has been made possible in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of Cultural Affairs within the Department of State, through funds administered by the Atlantic County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.
