ARTIST STATEMENT: “We Protest” by Mark Mancher “ I don’t protest to change the country, I protest so that the country doesn’t change me.” A.J. Muste It is startling to realize that in this Country’s 250 year history there have been no anti-government protests larger than those that occurred this past year. It has been said, sometimes derisively, that older Americans, boomers and older, are often in the vanguard. I think this is because we fear that everything positive accomplished during our lifetime, including civil rights, gender equality and preservation of representative democracy, is in peril. These photographs are an attempt to document some of these protests and the people who participate. They are also a tribute, to quote Dylan Thomas, to those who “won’t go gentle into that good night, but rage, rage against the dying of the light.” Mark Mancher is a street photographer who often processes his photos to give them a “photo-Illustrated” look.
