ARTIST STATEMENT: “Veiled Landscapes” by Pamela Waldroup My relationship with photography has always been rooted in a need to anchor myself to the world. From the moment I first picked up a camera, it served as more than a tool for documentation; it became a vehicle to validate my personal connection to a specific time or place and a way to amplify my physical reactions to the environment. Over years of refining how I both photograph and edit, I have learned to look past the literal geography of a place, focusing instead on how a place feels. This lifelong exploration finds a voice in Veiled Landscapes. Capturing these ephemeral, mist-shrouded environments allows me to memorialize the tactile sensation of fog against my skin and the fleeting interplay of visual details that play hide-and-seek in the moment. I am guided deeply by the words of naturalist John Burroughs: “I go to nature to be soothed, healed and have my senses put in order.” For me, the fog acts as a natural editor, stripping away the chaos of the everyday world to restore sensory orientation. The resulting images are visual interpretations inspired by a deliberate, constant awareness of the picture frame. By isolating quiet textures, shifting tonalities, and the delicate patterns of light and shadow, I translate my internal state into tangible form. Through this careful curation of the frame, I aim to create a space of quiet contemplation, offering viewers the same possibility of discovery and emotional stillness that I experience behind the lens.
