It marks Aaron Copland’s birthday (born November 14, 1900) as well as the exact anniversary of the fabled day in 1943 when a 25-year-old Leonard Bernstein stepped onto the podium of the New York Philharmonic on a few hours’ notice, catapulting him to international acclaim overnight. Led by Music Director Harry Marenstein, this performance honors their lifelong friendship and shared legacy, weaving together Copland’s lyrical nostalgia, Bernstein’s kinetic energy in West Side Story, and brilliant companion works by George Gershwin and Henry Cowell. Featured Repertoire Under the baton of Music Director Harry Marenstein, the program highlights iconic works by American masters: Aaron Copland: Our Town (Music from the Film Score) Variations on a Shaker Melody Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo Leonard Bernstein: Overture to West Side Story Selections from West Side Story George Gershwin: Promenade (“Walking the Dog”) Lullaby for Strings Henry Cowell: Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 3
