Curator Tour: The Way of Tea

@ Explore IMSS’ new exhibit “The Way of Tea” with insights from the curator! The Way of Tea: Curatorial Walkthrough & Matcha Experience Saturday October 3 at 11:00am Tickets include admission to the Museum, entry to the Curator led tour, and a matcha experience. Join curator and artist Mami Takahashi for a guided walkthrough of The Way of Tea: Objects, Practice, and Community, part of the Museum’s Japan in Practice exhibition series. Through objects on view, Takahashi will introduce visitors to chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony) and consider how utensils, gestures, movement, hospitality, and relationships come together through the preparation and sharing of tea. Following the gallery walkthrough, participants will gather in the Museum Library for an informal matcha experience and conversation. Each participant will receive an individual portion of Japanese matcha to prepare with hot water, accompanied by a small piece of handmade kohakutō. This program offers a curatorial introduction to the exhibition and an informal experience with matcha; it is not a formal tea ceremony or tea ceremony instruction. Tickets: $30 General Admission $25 IMSS Members $25 Students (use code STUDENT at check out) Valid student ID will be requested at check-in About Mami Takahashi Mami Takahashi is a Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist and Curator of Exhibitions & Special Projects at the International Museum of Surgical Science. Her artistic and curatorial practice explores relationships among material, memory, language, cultural continuity, and embodied knowledge. She works with museums and cultural organizations to develop exhibitions and public programs that bring Japanese art and cultural practices into dialogue with contemporary art and experience. The Japan in Practice Rotating Exhibit Series is put on in collaboration with the Japanese Culture Center. The Japanese Culture Center was established in 1977 in Chicago by Aikido Shihan (Teacher of Teachers) and Zen Master Fumio Toyoda to make some of the martial arts, crafts, and philosophical riches of Japan available to the public.
