Co-presented by FilmScene’s African Diaspora Committee, the Out of the Archive series highlights overlooked work from Black filmmakers with a monthly screening and discussion of restored and archival work, presenting films from throughout the diaspora, showcasing a diversity of cultures, genres, techniques, and eras. Arrive early for a pre-show meal! The Out of the Archive series is made possible through generous support from the following University of Iowa departments and units: Center for Human Rights, Department of Cinematic Arts, Department of English, Department of History, and School of Music. L.A. Rebellion filmmaker Alile Sharon Larkin (b. 1953) explores Black girlhood and womanhood in relation to societal beauty standards and ancestral belonging with these two short films.
