Ghosts that We Knew · Opening Reception

@ Ghosts that We Knew is a tribute to Sarah and George Josyln’s love of horticulture at the turn of the 20th century. They were known for their renowned orchid collection, which included more than 1,200 orchids, as well as a 6,200 square foot conservatory. Devastatingly, the conservatory, along with their beloved plants, trees, and grounds, was destroyed in the 1913 Easter Tornado. The exhibition serves as a small homage to that loss, both for them and the city, and features 16 detailed, vibrant colored-pencil botanical drawings by Gabriella Quiroz. Gabriella Quiroz is an Omaha, Nebraska-based artist. Her work has been featured in numerous group showings throughout Omaha and its surrounding areas. Gabi works primarily in oil paints and colored pencils developing works of symbolic imagery through flora and fauna. While she notes her education in the arts began from a very young age, her formal education took its roots at the University of Nebraska Omaha. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts specializing in painting and drawing and a minor in Art History. For Gabi celebrations such as Halloween, Christmas, and Dia de los Muertos played essential roles in her childhood and still hold meaning for her today. This, in part with her upbringing and experiences alongside other creative people, has led her to study symbolism and how it differs from society to society, throughout time. Her work continues to involve these subjects heavily, and as a result, it is expanding into exploring more with these mediums.
