Branch out and explore the wonders of Texas trees at our next Discovery Day: Into the Wood, a family-friendly celebration of nature, science, and play. This time, we’re diving into the fascinating world of woody plants, from the towering oaks that define our landscapes to the scientists and arborists who help protect them. Saturday, January 24 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Happening the same day: Our Winter Woody Plant Sale! Browse a curated selection of native shrubs and small trees while you’re here. Bring the whole family and enjoy: Tree planting demonstrations with tips on native species and care Career chats with professional tree climbers and arborists Hands-on exploration of tree rings, bark, and roots Insights into rare oak research and the work of conservation scientists Creative crafts and nature play inspired by Texas trees Scroll down for scheduled walks, talks, and activities happening throughout the day. Walk and Talks & Demonstrations Short, guided programs led by Wildflower Center staff and partners. 10:30 a.m. — Understory Trees 11:30 a.m. (Demonstration) — Tree Planting for Success 12:30 p.m. — Understanding Oak Wilt (Texas A&M Forest Service) 1:30 p.m. — Caring for Oak Trees Ongoing Activities (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) Hands-on stations and educational activities will be offered throughout the day. Partners include Texas A&M Forest Service, Austin Fire Department’s Wildfire Division, Bartlett Tree Experts, Capital Area Master Naturalists, the City of Austin’s Youth Forest Council, and more. Highlights include: Firewise information and home-safety tips Emerald ash borer education Mythbusting about Ashe juniper (Juniperus Asheii) Bird nest–making + endangered bird information Scavenger hunt Tree pruning basics Tree parts crafts Yard games like cornhole and giant Jenga Shop & Gallery Specials Enjoy 10% off select tree-focused books and 15% off wood-crafted items (excluding consignment).
