Library Street Collective is pleased to present, Beneath the Moonlight, a solo presentation of new work by Mickalene Thomas at the Shepherd. The exhibition marks a milestone for Thomas, introducing an entirely new body of work that expands her practice into an exploration of masculinity and the representation of the Black male body. Bringing together large-scale paintings, collage and photography, the exhibition reflects a pivotal shift in one of the most influential artistic practices in contemporary art. For more than two decades, Thomas has developed a distinctive visual language rooted in photography, translating her images into paintings embellished with rhinestones, collage, acrylic and enamel. Her work is widely recognized for its depiction of Black women posed within richly patterned interiors that draw from art history, fashion and the domestic sphere, reclaiming traditions that have historically excluded them.
