Born and raised in Madrid, pianist and composer Marta Sánchez has become a vital voice in New York City’s contemporary creative music scene. Her work blends sharp compositional vision with an innovative approach that has earned her wide international recognition. Shortly after arriving in New York, Marta formed her acclaimed quintet, releasing four albums: Partenika (2015), Danza Imposible (2017), El Rayo de Luz (2019), and SAAM (Spanish American Art Museum) (2022). All four recordings received significant praise, with Partenika named one of The New York Times’ 10 Best Albums of 2015 across all genres and appearing on multiple year-end lists. Danza Imposible earned high praise from major outlets and public radio, while El Rayo de Luz was again selected by The New York Times as one of the year’s top jazz albums and highlighted by DownBeat and WBGO. Her most recent quintet release, SAAM, continued this trajectory with strong coverage in leading American and international publications. Marta’s newest project, her trio with Savannah Harris and Chris Tordini, recently released Perpetual Void on Intakt Records. The album has received extensive critical acclaim, including a 4.5-star review from DownBeat. She has toured throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America, appearing at major venues and festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazzaldia, Inntöne, Eurojazz, and Winter Jazzfest, and performing at Carnegie Hall, the Village Vanguard, Birdland, Dizzy’s Club, The Jazz Gallery, and Smalls. Marta also collaborates widely, including performances and recordings with David Murray, Maria Grand, and the Anna Webber–Angela Morris Big Band. She is a two-time MacDowell Colony fellow and an award-winning film composer.
