Join LPCA & the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) for this year's Board Governance Excellence Post-Conference session that will be held Friday, October 23rd, from 8:30 AM - 2:00 PM! This year's Board Governance session will be presented by Emily Heard, NACHC's Vice President of Health Center Governance, who is responsible for the strategic direction of the Health Center Governance education program. Previously, Emily served as the Director, Health Center Governance at NACHC and led the development and implementation of governance training and technical assistance programs. Before joining NACHC, Emily served as a Senior Consultant at BoardSource, a nonprofit dedicated to building exceptional nonprofit boards, and she has held governance-focused positions at various nonprofits and associations. Emily has extensive experience designing curriculum, supporting CEO and board partnerships, and providing direct governance consultation. She is a skilled facilitator and published author on the topic of nonprofit governance. AGENDA Board Roles and Responsibilities Health center governance is complex. This reviews the three major categories of health center board roles: Strategy, Oversight and Policy, and Board Functioning. It also provides a high-level overview of board-focused requirements that are part of the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Health Center Program. The Board & CEO Relationship The strongest relationships between a board and CEO are based on mutual respect, trust, and role clarity. In this session, participants will learn about ways to develop a strong partnership between the board and CEO, as well as review the board’s key oversight role for the CEO. Common challenges that arise in distinguishing between governance and management will also be explored. If the PCA decides to include a health center CEO and board chair in this session, real world examples based on their experience will be included in the session. Effective Health Center Board Meetings Health center boards are unique in many ways, including in that they are required to hold monthly board meetings. This explores tips for effective board meetings, and good practices for before, during, and after a board meeting. It also highlights practices such as consent agendas, optimizing agendas for strategic conversations and decision-making, and technology enhancements such as board portals.
