In conjunction with Re|Sounding, now on view, join Maine Maritime Museum this spring and summer for an artist workshop and lecture series. Each month from May through August, we are hosting a different contributing artist for a unique learning experience, each examining art as a tool for exploring histories, and uncovering how historical and cultural contexts can influence art. James Eric Francis, Sr. (Penobscot) shares his knowledge and perspective in this lecture, in Long Reach Hall. This in-person event is free, but preregistration is required. Register Today Register Today About the Artist James Eric Francis, Sr. is the Penobscot Nation’s Tribal Historian. In addition to his work studying the relationship between Maine Native Americans and the landscape, James has also worked to implement Maine’s Native American Studies law and developed accompanying curricula; co-produced a film (Invisible) on race relations in Maine, and conducted an oral history project for the Penobscot Nation. He has curated or co-curated exhibits for the Bangor Museum and Center for History, the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, the Hudson Museum, and Harvard University.  James serves on the Board of Directors for Four Directions Development Corporation, a Native American Community Development Financial Institution. James serves on the Native American Advisory Committee for the Abbe Museum and the Native American Advisory Board for the Boston Children’s Museum and is a lifetime member of the Maine Historical Society.  He has served on the Advisory Board of the University of Maine’s Hudson Museum in Orono, Maine, Board of Directors for the Bangor Museum and Center for History where he served as Chair of the Collections committee. James has also served as Chair of the Penobscot Nation’s Cultural and Historic Preservation Committee. Recently James has returned to school to pursue a Intermedia Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Maine. Exhibit Contributions James served on the exhibit's Advisory Council, provided guidance on the inclusion of Wabanaki voices in the show, and contributed a custom art installation to the exhibit.
