Should you plant the seeds from that apple? The answer is no! The only way to get a specific kind of apple on your tree is through grafting. This process essentially creates a genetic clone, and you get that tasty apple on your tree. In this class we’ll cover basic apple genetics, run through different types of grafting, and then go through the grafting process hands-on. We will also take a walk together through the Shakers’ apple orchard and fruit trees on the property. Everyone will go home with a baby tree you grafted yourself, from Shaker stock, and the knowledge to repeat the process at home. Primarily there will be apples and pears to choose from.  Be warned though, grafting is addicting. You may end up with a full orchard before you know it! If you have a grafting knife, please kindly bring it with you to the class. We have a few to share, but more are always appreciated. Julia Walters is the owner of Snapdragon Homestead in North Yarmouth which offers a variety of homesteading classes and homemade products.
