About this event
One of 100 upcoming events at McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, and 4,740 across Phoenix.
Desert Discovery Ride from Fraesfield Trailhead. Difficulty Level: This route is best for advanced beginner/intermediate riders. We’ll be making several stops for rest and discussion. This ride is designed for 3 hours, with some moderate climbs, but does not require high technical competence. All our rides are “No Drop” meaning no rider will be left behind the group. Distance & Elevation Gain: This will be 13 miles with 500 feet of elevation gain. Expect a 3 hour ride at a moderate pace (appx 8 mph average speed at Browns). Ride Overview: The Sonoran Desert is full of interesting things you probably don’t know about. Join us for a scenic ride in the Northern Preserve, where we will climb into the northern section above Granite Mountain and Cholla Mountain. We’ll share insights from the conservancy’s ongoing work in the Preserve that we have learned over 35 years as stewards, the available trails, the colorful local history, and visit some of the remarkable natural features which draw thousands to the Preserve each year. Mountain Bike Event Requirements: Helmets are mandatory for all bike events. A mountain bike with wide knobby tires is required – please, no road bikes, hybrids, or folding bikes. Your bike must be in good working order – please check the tires, brakes, chain and general functionality before leaving home. E-bikes are allowed. You are expected to ride at the group speed and be cautious about passing or encountering others on the trails. What to Bring: A backpack with 2-3 liters of water, spare tubes and tools plus energy snacks. Restrooms are available at the trailhead. It’s always smart to have a paper map or mapping app in case you get separated from the group. Arrive 15 minutes before start of the ride for check-in and a brief bike inspection. Space is limited! Please save your spot with the RSVP below.
