Ride the Gooseneck and Discuss Preserve Fire Restoration from Fraesfield Trailhead Difficulty Level: This route is best for advanced beginner/intermediate riders. We will ride at a moderate pace – good cardio and bike handling skills are necessary. All our rides are “No Drop” meaning no rider will be left behind the group. Distance & Elevation Gain: This will be 10 miles with 500 feet of elevation gain. Expect a 2.5 hour ride at a moderate pace (appx 8-9 mph average speed). Ride Overview: There have been several fires in and around the Preserve in the last few years. Conservancy stewards and science staff, in conjunction with the City of Scottsdale and Scottsdale Community College, plant new flora and monitor growth patterns over the years. This project is to helping develop best practices for restoring burned areas in the Sonoran Desert. This easier ride is smooth sailing with a focus on education not speed. We will ride south from Fraesfield on Gooseneck to the Saguaro Nest Trail with stops to observe and talk about these fire restoration efforts. Mountain Bike Event Requirements: Helmets are mandatory for all bike events. A mountain bike with wide knobby tires is required – please, no road bikes, hybrids, or folding bikes. Your bike must be in good working order – please check the tires, brakes, chain and general functionality before leaving home. E-bikes are allowed. You are expected to ride at the group speed and be cautious about passing or encountering others on the trails. What to Bring: A backpack with 2-3 liters of water, spare tubes and tools plus energy snacks. Restrooms are available at the trailhead. It’s always smart to have a paper map or mapping app in case you get separated from the group. Arrive 15 minutes before start of the ride for check-in and a brief bike inspection. Space is limited!
