Painting the Working Waterfront with Philip Frey

Meetinghouse Arts, Freeport, Maine October 21-23, 2026 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. $400 per student Minimum 8, Maximum 12 This engaging 3-day workshop is focused on painting the visually exciting world of the working waterfront and landscapes with man-made structures. Using source material, students will learn to simplify and integrate natural and fabricated elements, as well as to organize composition and color with clear intention. Small-group immersion, demonstrations, short lectures, and one-on-one guidance help ensure visible progress in your work. What You Will Learn Throughout the workshop, we’ll focus on the core problems that tend to hold painters back in landscape paintings of the working waterfront and manufactured structures: Simplifying complex natural and man-made scenes into clear, paintable forms Seeing and organizing value and color relationships Choosing effective color palettes through an understanding of color harmony Building strong compositions using harmonic armature (dynamic symmetry) Developing a repeatable painting process you can use after the workshop Each concept is taught through demonstrations and lectures, guided practice, and direct instructor feedback via Procreate. A materials and reading list will be supplied at registration. All levels are welcome but students should be familiar with their medium.
