Content Advisory: Death of a fictional character Age Recommendation: All ages A part of our Main Stage Series A STAGED CONCERT collaboration with Metropolis School of Performing Arts and JAM Orchestra. What is a staged concert? The orchestra is on stage, fully visible to the audience. To be able to see as well as hear the players in these timeless productions is a truly thrilling experience. Will the actors be in character? Absolutely. They will inhabit their roles completely, and there might be some quite physical staging. There is certainly no less drama than in a fully staged production. Are there costumes, props and set pieces? Yes, and no. Sometimes the actors will be in full costume, and sometimes the designers make use of cleverly symbolic elements. There is also use of dramatic lighting and with the new projectors purchased with money raised from our Fund-A-Cause at our 2026 Gala, we will be able to offer a grander visual experience during these stagings. Why a staged concert? It all began for a practical reason – when collaborating with a full orchestra, it is simply not possible to fit them in and out of sight in the usual ways on a stage of our size. However, we couldn’t let that stop us from programming these incredible works, so we found a new way to do it that allows us to really let the music shine in a way that has become increasingly rare in the world of theatre today. ABOUT THE SHOW Ariel, a young mermaid, is itching to explore beyond the boundaries of her father King Triton’s watery kingdom. Admiring her collection of human goods, Ariel daydreams of emerging onto the surface, walking on land, and meeting the strange human she saw sailing by. Meanwhile, Ursula – Triton’s sister – dreams about her own plans to overthrow King Triton. When a storm throws Prince Eric overboard his ship and Ariel saves his life, Triton is enraged, and destroys her precious collection of human detritus. Ariel, distraught and furious at her father, is conned by the scheming Ursula and agrees to sacrifice her voice in exchange for her land legs – but only for three days, during which time she must kiss Prince Eric, or else become Ursula’s captive forever. For three days, Ariel attempts to prove to Eric her love for him, but without her voice, she falls short. Ursula returns, dragging Ariel back into the depths of the sea, but not before revealing that she killed Ariel’s mother. Ariel destroys the shell that harnesses Ursula’s power, thereby destroying Ursula completely. King Triton realizes that his daughter does have the power to choose her own destiny, and grants her back her human form, where she is reunited with the Prince.
