Workshops

Thursday, May 28; 6–9pm CT Add supplementary two-dimensional material—including photographs, letters, or found ephemera—to artist’s books and other book arts projects in this in-person workshop. Learn four techniques: cloth hinging, paper hinging, cutting corner slots (non-adhesive method), and traditional “tipping-in.” Tipping-in is a historical method of adding illustrations to printed books.  This hands-on, in-person workshop will focus on making four or five sample pages, featuring each technique, to be used for future reference. Instruction will include adaptations to the structural design of the book with a view of balancing the bulk of the supplemental content within the spine. Pros and cons of different adhesives will be discussed and special attention will be given to challenges of incorporating inflexible or cross-grain material. Example artist’s books that feature hinged, tipped in, or corner-slotted content will be shown for inspiration. We may also have time to discuss questions and ideas related to participants' individual projects. Level: Intermediate. Participants need to have already taken Introduction to Hand Bookbinding or equivalent to participate in this workshop. Certificate: 3 hours, Category B or D Pricing $70 | $35 Scholarship | $105 Pay-It-Forward $20 materials fee Scholarships are available for individuals facing adversity as it relates to identity, income/wealth, and lack of access to arts resources.
