Workshops Arts & Culture

Friday–Saturday, May 29 & 30; 10am–4pm CT Watercolor marbling has been used by bookbinders since its introduction to Europe during the 17th century until the advent of vibrant acrylic paints in the second part of the 20th century. This in-person workshop follows Regina and Daniel St. John’s contemporary classic watercolor techniques with Rachel and Olga’s adaptations to recreate some of the classical patterns used in traditional marbling. We will delve into a variety of stone patterns, including Shell, Stormont, Italian Vein, and more if time allows. Each pattern will be introduced through demonstration, with time for guided practice. Instruction will cover how to mix paint solutions and how to use various additives—including turpentine, ox gall, soap, soap spirits, and walnut oil—depending on the technique. After each pattern is learned, the instructors will offer suggestions for how to experiment and play with the techniques to build your skills and create unique effects. Participants will receive a reference handout detailing the procedure to make each pattern as well as basic recipes and a resources list. Level: Intermediate. Introduction to Marbling or other introductory marbling experience is required to register for this workshop. Certificate: 12 hours, Category B, C, or D Pricing $294 | $147 Scholarship | $441 Pay-It-Forward $75 materials fee Scholarships are available for individuals facing adversity as it relates to identity, income/wealth, and lack of access to arts resources.
