FREE | For Local Artists Join us for a ArtTalk! Costumes are encouraged for this gathering as visual artists of all experience levels and disciplines are invited to bring one piece of artwork in any stage of development for an informal community critique. For this ArtTalk, we will highlight the theme of surrealism. All artists are invited to share their work, participate in the critique, and listen to community interpretations of their art. Artists may bring physical artwork or send any digital artwork to Tiiwon Siaway at tsiaway@mmfa.org so it may be displayed in advance. Register for free at MMFA.org. What is Surrealism? Link: Surrealism Art – A Deep Dive Into the Surrealism Art Movement The word Surrealism refers to an art movement that entered the unsuspecting art world in the mid-1920s. It was officially founded by André Breton, a Parisian poet. Surrealism became a formal art movement, with a strong political, philosophical and social undercurrent that defined the methods used to elicit shock and curiosity among its following. Its ground-breaking attempt to cut through the pre-existing norms of the time spread to Europe and the USA in the 1920s and 1930s. Surrealist art was an outcry against the rationality that its proponents saw as a dominating and destructive force in society, and indeed in the minds of people, that was responsible for much of the social ills of the time. Through cinema, art, and literature, Surrealist artists let their unconscious minds take center stage as they used a variety of techniques to map the clockwork of their dreams and innermost imaginings. How to Critique Visual Art 1) Describe what you see. 2) Analyze how well the art piece uses the elements of art and principles of design. 3) Interpret the meaning of the artwork. What does it make you feel? 4) Decide if the art piece successful/unsuccessful to you. Why or why not? 2026 ArtTalk Schedule ArtTalk occurs on the third Thursday of every other month (bi-monthly).
