Glem, a celebrated cuatro player, and Reider, an accomplished accordionist, pianist, and composer, met in New York City in 2016. From parks and subway stations to Lincoln Center and NPR Tiny Desk, their journey culminates in Brooklyn-Cumaná, their debut album nominated for Best Instrumental Record at the 2023 Latin GRAMMYs. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: “It’s a very special thing when two musical cultures come together to create something that didn’t exist before.” – NPR Latin GRAMMY nominees Jorge Glem and Sam Reider, have blazed an exhilarating musical trail linking the United States and Venezuela. GRAMMY-nominated cuatrista and founding member of the acclaimed Venezuelan musical ensemble C4 Trio, Jorge Glem, met multi-talented American accordionist, pianist, composer Sam Reider at a house party in New York City in 2016. From their very first gigs in public parks and subway stations to recent sold-out concerts Lincoln Center, SFJAZZ, and NPR Tiny Desk, Jorge and Sam delight in the power of music, friendship, and improvisation to transcend cultural barriers. Their debut record, Brooklyn-Cumaná, was released in November 2022 and was subsequently nominated for Best Instrumental Record in the 2023 Latin GRAMMY Awards. The album’s diverse repertoire includes Venezuelan merengue, joropo, and other traditional rhythms alongside original compositions drawing on American jazz and roots music. Brooklyn-Cumaná is joyful expression of limitless potential of music to capture the imagination and entice the body to get up and dance. Sam Reider is a Latin GRAMMY-nominated pianist, accordionist, composer, and educator whose work brings together jazz, folk, popular song, and contemporary composition. He has performed at major festivals and venues around the world, with appearances on NPR, PBS, and the BBC, and collaborations with artists including Jon Batiste, Paquito d’Rivera, and Jorge Glem. His 2022 solo piano record Petrichor received four stars and made the Best of 2022 in Downbeat Magazine, and his duo album with Jorge Glem, Brooklyn-Cumaná, was featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk and nominated for Best Instrumental Album at the 2023 Latin GRAMMYs. A U.S. Department of State musical ambassador, Reider has traveled the world carrying his accordion and collaborating with international artists, with folk songs and stories from his travels inspiring much of his original compositions. Jorge Glem is a Latin Grammy-winning virtuoso of the Venezuelan cuatro, mandolinist, and producer celebrated as one of Venezuela’s most innovative musical figures. Hailing from Cumaná and now based in the U.S., he has performed solo concertos with Gustavo Dudamel and world-renowned orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and the New York Philharmonic. He has shared the stage with globally recognized artists including Jon Batiste, Paquito d’Rivera, Rubén Blades, and Natalia Lafourcade, fusing the cuatro into genres ranging from jazz and salsa to bluegrass and rock. As a founding member of C4 Trío, he has earned multiple Latin Grammy Awards, and his duo album with Sam Reider, Brooklyn-Cumaná, received a Latin Grammy nomination in 2023 for Best Instrumental Album.
