Inspired by MBAW’s award-winning documentary “The Quilt”, this special concert brings together the San Antonio Gospel Heritage Choir (of SAAACAM) and The Legacy Collective (TLC) to celebrate the rich legacy of African American music. As part of DreamWeek San Antonio, the performance highlights genres born from deep cultural history with soulful and powerful storytelling. Check out this excerpt from last year’s Quilt concert: The San Antonio Gospel Heritage Choir was founded by San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) in 2023 to celebrate the legacy of gospel music in San Antonio. This multi-generational, multicultural choir promotes SAAACAM’s mission to collect, preserve and share the history and cultural heritage of African descendants in San Antonio and the Southwest. This will be the choir’s second time (first in 2025) performing for “The Quilt: Live in Concert”, which is now becoming an annual favorite during Dreamweek San Antonio in January. The Legacy Collective is a dynamic, multicultural ensemble of acclaimed performing and recording artists dedicated to honoring African-American history and culture through the arts. The ensemble’s mission is twofold: to preserve the enduring legacy of African-American musicians, composers, and writers who have shaped global culture, and to inspire, educate, and engage audiences across generations and backgrounds. More than a concert experience, The Legacy Collective presents immersive cultural programming that blends classical music, jazz, spirituals, gospel, and hip-hop. Each performance creates a powerful musical dialogue between past and present, celebrating heritage while inviting reflection, conversation, and deeper understanding. Praised for its breadth of styles and artistic depth, the ensemble offers audiences an unforgettable journey through the evolution and continued vitality of Black musical expression. The ensemble is led by violinist Tami Lee Hughes (performed with MBAW in 2018), whose performances have been hailed by critics for their “singing, lush quality reminiscent of Perlman” and for rising “to considerable technical challenges” with expressive authority. A champion of music by African-American composers, Hughes brings together an exceptional group of collaborators, including pianist Ellen R. Sommer, a sought-after collaborative artist and recording musician with an international career; bassist Joel Powell (Joel Baba Onifade Powell); and percussionist C.J. Watson, a fourth-generation musician whose work spans gospel, jazz, and commercial media. Together, The Legacy Collective delivers performances that are both artistically compelling and culturally resonant, reaffirming music’s power to preserve history and inspire future generations.
