Opera Southwest: Catán Salsipuedes: A Tale of Love, War, and Anchovies April 18, 23, & 25, 2027 2:00 pm Sundays, 7:30 pm Friday NHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre Music / Daniel Catán Libretto / Eliseo Alberto and Francisco Hinojosa Salsipuedes: A Tale of Love, War, and Anchovies, a sparkling comedy by the beloved Daniel Catán – sometimes called “Mexico’s Puccini.” If you fell in love with his lush, gorgeous sound in our 2020 production of Il Postino, get ready to hear what Catán sounds like when he’s having fun. Set on the exotic Caribbean island of Salsipuedes (“get out if you can” in Spanish), the story follows two newlywed couples whose honeymoons are spectacularly derailed when the husbands accidentally end up aboard a ship headed off to fight the Nazis. Along the way, they get tangled up in a corrupt government plot involving the island’s most prized commodity: anchovies. Witty, warm, and pulsing with Caribbean rhythms – great opera doesn’t always have to end in tears. CREATIVE TEAM Wigs & Makeup / Jacqueline Chavez Lighting / Daniel Chapman Chorus Master / Aaron Howe Piano tuning and preparation are provided by Albuquerque Piano Services Running Time: TBD SUNG IN SPANISH -English translations are projected above the stage for all operas- Sundays – $35, $55, $75, $99, & $119 Wednesday – $19, $39, $59, $69, & $99 Friday – $29, $49, $69, $89, & $109 With discounts for anyone 30 years old and younger.
