Celebrate National Maritime Day – Free Admission for Maritime Workers Friday, May 22 | All Day In honor of National Maritime Day, the National Museum of the Great Lakes is offering free admission to our exhibits and vessels to all maritime workers on Friday, May 22. Established by Congress in 1933, National Maritime Day recognizes the vital contributions of the maritime industry and honors the dedication of the men and women who work on the water. The date commemorates the historic 1819 journey of the Savannah—the first steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Join us as we celebrate the legacy and ongoing efforts of those who keep our maritime heritage alive. From commercial sailors and shipyard workers to Coast Guard members and port personnel, we thank you for your service and welcome you aboard—for free. Valid maritime credentials or proof of employment required for free admission.
We tell the awe-inspiring stories of the Great Lakes. 500 breathtaking photographs, 250 artifacts, 45 interactive exhibits, and a 617-foot freighter.
