Provost, author and publisher Mark Twain’s Nevada Book Title: Mark Twain’s Nevada: Samuel Clemens in the Silver State Summary of Talk: Follow in the footsteps of the celebrated American storyteller in Nevada, visiting the places he lived, visited, worked, and wrote about. Read about his adventures traveling the Wild West, prospecting for gold, and digging up (or making up) stories for the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City. Illustrated with numerous vintage and modern photos and illustrations, these are the remarkable stories that transformed Samuel Clemens into Mark Twain and a territory into a state. Speaker Bio: Stephen H. Provost is an award-winning author of historical nonfiction and speculative fiction. A journalist with more than 30 years of experience and a former educator, he has written and/or published more than 70 books. From 1986 to 2018, he worked as an editor, reporter, and columnist at four daily newspapers in California, including as news editor at The Fresno Bee and managing editor of The Cambrian. In 2026, the author won American Legacy Book Awards for “Nightmare’s Eve” (General Horror) and “America’s First Highways” (U.S. History). His “The Talismans of Time” was also a finalist for General Fantasy award. Stephen H. Provost The author’s nonfiction works include numerous historical and travel books on the nation’s highways. Among these are his three-volume “America’s Historic Highways” series, his five-volume “Highways of the West,” two books on “California’s Historic Highways,” and his three-book series “Roadside Illustrated.” Others include “The Legend of Molly Bolin” (sports biography); “Mark Twain’s Nevada,” “Virginia City Then & Now,” and “The Comstock Chronicles (history). He is the founder and publisher of Dragon Crown Books, Ltd. The Writers’ Wednesday Lecture Series, held on the second Wednesday of each month, features a different author who takes part in a book signing, a presentation, and a question-and-answer session with the audience. The program intends to highlight writers who focus on Nevada, the Great Basin, or the West in general. The authors discuss the content of their books but also share details about the creative process. We would like to thank our partner, the Knights of Pythias, for hosting our off-site lectures. The Knights of Pythias fraternal organization promotes friendship among men and for the general welfare of its membership. They strive to make the world a better place by practicing the principles of friendship, charity, and benevolence through community service.
