About this event

Common Threads presents The Revolution of 1800: Monarchists, Jacobins, Quids and the Rise of Partisan Politics Speaker: Elizabeth Nelson, Associate Professor University of Las Vegas The election of Thomas Jefferson to the Presidency in 1800 was heralded by his supporters as more than just a political victory; in their eyes it was a redemption of ideals of the Constitution which they claimed had been trampled by the Federalists. What was heralded as a new standard of political virtue, however, rapidly devolved into acrimonious debates about patronage, loyalty, and the fear of political defection. In the pages of a newly partisan press, founded to do battle over political ideas and ideals, the editors debated the terms of representative government and the dangers presented to the Constitution by their political foes, crafting a new language of politics to rally the loyalty of new voters and define the political terrain of the new Republic.
