The Harlowe Patriots

HARLOWE, Craven County – It’s a little known but important piece of American history: black soldiers fighting against the British in the Revolutionary War. It’s estimated that 5,000 black soldiers served on the Patriot side during the Revolution, which lasted from 1775 to 1783. Fourteen free men of color from the Harlowe community of Havelock fought in key battles of the war, with General George Washington leading the fight for independence. Join the New Bern Historical Society as they host Dr. Valerie Johnson as she shares this important story from local history on Sunday, September 13, 2026 at 2pm at Orringer Auditorium at Craven Community College. Learn about these 14 brave men and the folks that discovered their story and the families that are still here.
