About this event
One of 18 upcoming events at NH Audubon, and 977 across Portsmouth.
Join NH Audubon for a birding outing along the trails at the McLane Center! McLane is home to grassland, forest, and freshwater habitats. We will look for New Hampshire’s year-round birds such as Hairy Woodpeckers, Tufted Titmice, and Golden-crowned Kinglets. This is an informal birding outing that begins at the center parking lot and explores the trails with local birder and NH Audubon volunteer Joe Mahoney. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder, come to learn new techniques, network with other birders, or share your expertise with the group. This is a free event. We will have a limited number of binoculars for folks to borrow, but if you have a pair, please bring them along. Please dress for the weather, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over varied trails with some elevation change through grassy and wooded terrain. Trails may be soggy or muddy in the rainy season. Also, as a reminder, prepare for the sun and any insects we might encounter. Dogs are not welcome on this walk. The nature trail is well-kept, at least sixty inches wide, complete with pull-outs, and is free of steps, ramps, gates, and bollards for easy navigation. The parking lot is paved, providing accessible and van-accessible spaces, curb cuts, and a pull-off area. Restrooms are accessible, featuring wide doorways. While rest areas are limited, there are benches along the trail. The path presents a mix of shaded and sunlit sections. There may be some traffic noises from the roads nearby. Regular maintenance, including mowing and pruning, ensures the trail remains free of branches and overgrown vegetation. By attending this event, you and anyone you register on behalf of agree to NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver. Please contact Nicole Hertel with any questions. Birding Outings are free to attend. If you feel inspired to support New Hampshire Audubon’s work, please consider a gift to our Annual Fund at nhaudubon.org/donate.
