Allen: Fugue in g minor, “Little,” BWV 578 Ives, arr. Crees: Variations on “America” Bruce Broughton: Fanfares, Marches, Hymns, & Finale Richard Strauss, at the precocious age of 17, composed his Serenade with the influences of Mendelssohn and Mozart in mind, while already finding his own distinctive voice. Hear this remarkable early work performed by the brass and woodwind sections of your NMPhil. Also discover, perhaps for the first time, Émile Bernard’s sublime Divertissement, a hidden gem of the wind repertoire. The program also celebrates the brilliance and versatility of brass ensemble music, from JaRod Hall’s exhilarating Silver Fanfare and Allen’s stirring arrangement of Bach’s beloved “Little” Fugue to Crees’s vibrant setting of Ives’s Variations on “America.” Bruce Broughton’s Fanfares, Marches, Hymns, & Finale brings the concert to a thrilling conclusion with a colorful tribute to the rich traditions of American brass writing.
