Opening with Mozart’s sparkling Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, the program continues with Haydn’s poignant Symphony No. 44, nicknamed “Mourning” because the composer wished its slow movement to be performed at his own funeral. The concert culminates with Beethoven’s First Symphony, a remarkable work that honors the Classical traditions of his mentors while revealing the bold musical voice that would forever transform the symphonic genre.
