She often published under a male pseudonym so she could earn money for her work. She based the novel on her own family with her as the protagonist Jo March trying to get published with her sisters, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Alcott proved her merit when “Little Women” was an immediate and massive success, both critically and commercially and remains a literary classic. The novel’s financial success provides Alcott with a stable income for the rest of her life. Its enduring appeal is reflected in its continued popularity, numerous adaptations, a large dedicated fan base across generations.
