BUY TICKETSChris Tanner’s “Snake Alley” explores a world of intoxicating criminal lust, inspired by the night markets of Taipei, Taiwan and featuring mixed media sculpture and a dark and sparkling cabaret on Sept 25th.In 1985 Chris Tanner travelled to Taipei, Taiwan, where he paid a visit to Snake Alley in the Night Market. Here, Tanner encountered a world of intoxicating criminal lust, where snake handers drained the blood of cobras to create a powerful aphrodisiac. Once patrons had consumed this drink, they would visit the prostitutes who plied their trade at the market, who dressed like Wall Street secretaries and had their faces painted bright red. Bearing witness to these electrifying sensations had a profound effect on Tanner, inspiring him to create the paintings that launched his career as a visual artist. “Snake Alley” at Pangea features stretched, stuffed leather sculptures on wood, encrusted with minerals, bullets, pailettes, shells, gemstones and other mixed media. These abstract forms suggest blood coursing through the body, engorging the veins, muscles and genitals, and evoke sensual memories of Tanner’s 1985 visit to Snake Alley. On Sept 25th, Tanner will present a cabaret at Pangea to accompany the exhibition, with costumes and performances by Machine Dazzle, music by Joe Montoya, directed and featuring Emilio Garcia and also featuring Stephen Quinn, Susan Hwang, Vitorrio Mura and Austin Dalgleish.Christopher Tanner (born 1955) is a multi-disciplinary artist from California who has been a creator in New York City for the past 45 years. Steeped in the culture of Lower East Side queer arts, his work reflects his vibrant life experience and recounts the incessant beauty that surrounds him. Tanner’s work incorporates diverse materials, including ancient redwood driftwood, ornate second-hand brooches, earth-derived minerals, healing precious stones, glitter, beads, paillettes and more to create captivating, ever-shifting installations. Tanner’s works attempt to embody the histories of the objects from which they are composed, forming a non-linear, celebratory timeline that links them in shimmering harmony and culminates in a collection of explosive and flamboyant shrines. Tanner explores the tension between life and death, inviting the viewer to interact with reflections that animate the forms, confronting mortality while subverting convention. He has had over 25 solo exhibitions in New York City and abroad, and has been reviewed by NY Times, Art In America, Art Forum, ELLE Decor and Harpers Bazaar. VENUE DETAILSAll Sales Are Final.
