Our exhibition Designed to Be Red: Native American & Indigenous Poster Works celebrates the history, present, and future of Indigenous design. Join artist Ella Mahoney (Wampanoag Tribe, Aquinnah) for a tour of the exhibition followed by a special printmaking workshop. Mahoney will guide families through linocut and fabric printing, inspired by her personal artistic process and the bold colors and patterns featured in Designed to Be Red. Ella Mahoney is a visual artist, illustrator, educator, and a member of the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah. Her art practice centers on storytelling, often drawing from Wampanoag creation stories, her personal experience of indigeneity, and tribal connections to land and water to create indigenous futurisms. Through engaging with stories through painting and installation– she offers different avenues to build deeper connections with the meaning and purpose of each story, building on indigenous history and legends for the future. Working primarily in cyanotype, acrylic, and ink, Mahoney’s recent work focuses on large-scale silk installations that evoke the movement, memory, and atmosphere of north east coastal environments, and more specifically, Aquinnah. She has illustrated children’s books for the Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project and collaborated with institutions such as the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Long Island Children’s Museum, and Massachusetts College of Art, Sylvester Manor, and Long House Reservation, and the Trustees of Reservations exhibiting in indoor and outdoor settings and creating immersive works in dialogue with place. This program invites children 5–11 years old and their adults to collaborate (siblings are welcome). This is not a drop-off program. Poster Kids is offered on the third Sunday of the month, when museum admission is free for all visitors. The education team reserves five tickets for each Poster Kids event for families who cannot pay the fee. Please reach out to [email protected] for further details. Refunds are not available for this program. Accessibility Note: Masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact [email protected] or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs.
