Copperplate Photogravure

Description: Copperplate Photogravure with Digital Positives Photogravure yields a true continuous tone photograph etched into a copperplate. This technique has origins in early photography of the 19th Century. It remains one of the most beautiful forms of black and white photo reproduction. The class will take you through the process step-by-step, from making a digital positive to exposure, development, etching, and printing of the copperplate photogravure with ink on cotton rag paper. Specific materials are required so please do not print your own positives or buy copper unless you are an advanced student. Class is limited to 6 students. In addition to in class time, non-members receive 33 hours of open studio time ; additional hours may be purchased as needed. To arrange your out of class studio time please email [email protected]. Join as a member for unlimited open studio time, and a 25% discount toward classes. Instructor Bio: Beth Ganz (b. Jersey City, New Jersey) is a multidisciplinary visual artist, who lives and works in New York City. She is interested in the intersection of landscape, digital technology, and abstraction. She works in paint, brush and ink drawing, individually and alongside digital and analog printing techniques, such as photogravure and intaglio printing. She graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking with honors. Ganz’s work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including; Overview: Prints and Drawings of Sacred Mountains at Planthouse Gallery, Atlas Project at Cynthia-Reeves Gallery, Up Close and Far Away, Grids and Toiles: Beth Ganz at Wave Hill House, Wave Hill, and Geothermal Topographies at Reeves Contemporary. She has also shown in a myriad of group exhibitions, and her work is well represented in many public and private collections, including the 9-11 Memorial Museum, the Library of Congress, New York Historical Society, and the New York Public Library Prints Collection. Ganz teaches workshops in photogravure and intaglio at Manhattan Graphics Center and has been a long-time grantee of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. In 2025 the book, Axis Mundi: 32 Views of Sacred Mountains, was published as a limited edition artist book.
